Assignment #2: Job Description Draft

Client Service Associate

Imagine you are a journalist working on a breaking news story. You need expert opinions but do not personally know any specialists in the field. As a Client Service Associate at AlphaSights, that is where I come in.

So, what exactly is a Client Service Associate? I asked myself the same question before working there. AlphaSights acts as a bridge between experts and clients. So, as a Client Service Associate, I am in charge of connecting my clients (like the journalist) with experts in the industry they are interested in. So, what exactly does this role entail?

Below are three descriptions to help sum up the different roles of a Client Service Associate:

  • Researcher

  • Salesperson

  • Project Manager

Researcher

In this role, the Client Service Associate acts as a Researcher for their client. We accomplish this by:

  • Researching industry professionals and experts in the relevant field

  • Identifying and vetting experts via phone call

  • Staying up to date on market trends, acquisitions, and mergers

Example: Let’s say I am working on a new client project that needs an expert in environmental energy. I start researching online and come across an article about a professor who has spoken at many conferences regarding this topic. I look up their name in our database and find that she had worked with us before (making my life as the researcher a lot easier). Now, the next step of this process moves toward the Salesperson role.

Salesperson

The work of a Salesperson occurs in these ways:

  • Marketing our services through multi-channel outreach

  • Selling the company's value proposition to potential experts

  • Negotiating hourly rates with experts

Example: After researching and finding the expert, I use the number in our system to call her. When I get on the phone, I can tell that she is a bit hesitant. She tells me that the last time they participated in an interaction like this it was a negative experience. I acknowledge her concerns first and then emphasize the seamless experience we offer, the credibility of our clients, and the flexibility in negotiating her rates. Through building trust with the client, I close the deal and sell the call.

Project Manager

A Client Service Associate earns the last role by demonstrating strengths in the two previous roles. The work of a Project Manager occurs in these three ways:

  • Juggling multiple expert-client connections at once to ensure a smooth process for all my clients

  • Overseeing timelines between multiple clientele

  • Maintaining communication with all stakeholders

Example: My boss increases my workload after demonstrating great skill on this project. I receive the responsibility to work on several client projects rather than one. Now, I am tasked with several demands and differing deadlines from a multitude of clients. This responsibility is like a talent agent that manages several actors who each have their demands in what roles they want.

As a Client Service Associate at AlphaSights, I developed essential professional and client management skills. Ultimately, the ability to think quickly, communicate persuasively, and manage multiple priorities at once has not only shaped my career aspirations but has also given me a strong foundation for any fast-paced business environment.

  1. I appreciate how clearly you explained the unique role of a Client Service Associate at AlphaSights, breaking it down into three distinct aspects - researcher, salesperson, and project manager. The real-world example of finding and convincing the hesitant professor really helped illustrate the challenges and skills required in this role. It's impressive how you contributed to revenue growth while developing professional skills across multiple areas of the business.

  3. I really liked the examples you used to explain the different sections of your job. At first, it felt a little overwhelming understand what was going on as I'm an English major with very little knowledge about the world of corporate finance, but your explanations really helped me understand what Client Service does. I think that you could even incorporate some examples earlier on in the introduction to explain things like what "certain business needs" mean to really paint a picture of your roll from the get go. I think your job description came together great and I can't wait to see where you go with it!

  4. While the title of this role might be confusing to an outsider such as myself, you demonstrated such a strong understanding of what it means to be a Client Service Associate and were able to break it down in a way that I believe anyone could relate to. It's also impressive how you transitioned from associate to having your own associates as a project manager. If you wanted to make the description even more digestible for someone unfamiliar with the industry, I would include some comparisons to other jobs or scenarios in your life to remove some of the complex vocabulary that is specific to your role.
